So at 52 years old I have come to the realization that while I read a lot…I am not well read. There gaping holes in the types and quality of books I have read over the years. I tend to stick within a narrow range of genres, mostly non-fiction history and biography. I am especially wanting in the classics (I’ve never read Catcher in the Rye for God’s sakes!).
I’ve decided to rectify this situation by coming up with a list of books I MUST read before I die! The question was how to come up with this list? What books should I include?
I was actually inspired to start this quest by an article I saw recently describing a list some authors and publishers had derived on Amazon.com of the 100 books you must read before you die. So that list is the kernel around which my total list was formed.
So, the list of 642 (and counting) books that I am committed to reading before I die (unless I get hit by a bus or something) was derived by adding the following together:
|Bucket Source Code||Bucket Source Description|
|FP||Francis Parkman Prize for American History and Biography|
|NBA||National Book Award Winner|
|NFP||Pulitzer Prize Winner for General Non-Fiction|
|PBA||Pulitzer Prize Winner for Biography/Autobiography|
|PH||Pulitzer Prize Winner for History|
|PF||Pulitzer Prize Winner for Fiction|
|Amazon 100||Amazon.com list of 100 books to read before you die|
|W100||World Library list of 100 greatest books of all time|
|Nobel||Works by Nobel Prize for Literature Winners|
|Booker||Booker Man Prize|
|Faulkner||Pen/Faulkner Award Winners|
|Nebula||Nebula Award for Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel|
|Hugo||Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel|
Add to this all the books I have already read and reviewed, and any new books that come along that demand to be read!
Suggestions are welcome!
